Dress for success? Dress to conceive, rather

PARIS -- Women take greater care over their appearance when they are at peak levels of monthly fertility, according to a study reported in a recent edition of the New Scientist.

University of California at Los Angeles researchers worked with a group of 30 women aged 18 to 37. They took two full-body photographs of each volunteer -- one when the woman was close to ovulation and highly fertile, and the other at a point of low fertility in the menstrual cycle.

Observers were then asked to look at the photos and try to decide which of the two showed the woman trying to look more attractive. They chose the woman in her "high fertility" photograph nearly 60 percent of the time more often than would be expected by chance.

"Though not in the same class as the obvious physical cues other primate females give when they are ovulating, it is the first evidence that women openly advertise their fertility," the British weekly says.

The scientists were intrigued that all the women volunteers said they were in a committed relationship with men. If so, why would they go to the trouble of dressing up? A possible answer: a genetic drive which prompts women with high fertility to feel attracted to men other than their primary partners.

The paper appears in full in a specialist US journal, Hormones and Behavior, published by the Society for Behavioral Neuroendocrinology.

Well, that certainly explains my urge to buy new clothes when I'm in the cycle!

LOL, Lily. Is that a wash or rinse cycle?

Of course women need to dress up all the time, dragon! What a silly research. Unless we're at home scrubbing, when out you need to tidy up and shine. I know in America you can wear anything you like and Oz is getting like that too but I still think a woman needs to be decent, if not her best, when she goes outdoors amongst the general public.

Sexual dressing? Sounds good to me! Does that include flinty panties and other light wear? I do so think women look much better in as few clothes as possible, that is to say, PRETTY women!

LOL - yes, I can go for that! I think it's good that women can wear what they want. I really wouldn't want to look at hordes of black dresses, burkas?, or whatever they are called in the muslim countries every time I go out. if men can wear what they want so should women. It's a two-way street, IMO.

I agree, James. I think women should wear what they want, why not. I don't understand the problem muslim men have with this anyway. It's not like Western men constantly attack any women who wears a skirt or light clothes like in Summer. That only means they have no control over themselves at all.

Now why am I not surprised that men want women to wear skimpy clothes? Gee, let me think... LOL

Surely, muslim men have no restraint when women are free, they are taught to think this way for generations, it must be difficult for them to see women in any other way than they always have. Personally, I don't give a hoot what they think as long as they stay away from me and keep their thoughts to themselves. I don't take too kindly to men that are harrassing.

If you want to air your thoughts about muslim men or islam in general there's a topic especially for that. I don't know how Australians feel about it in general but there were some reports on incidents involving muslim men and teenagers over recent years. And wasn't that Australian imam the one that said women were like raw meat or something?

So please, do let us have your thoughts on it - Islamisation of the West.

Does being always sexy count? I always dress up (except when I'm alone naturally) and the men seemed to like it. But I wouldn't see I'm dressing to get fertilized!!!

Apparently that is exactly what you are doing, Divinia. Looking your best is a way to advertise you're good breeding material on a deep psychological and genetic level, and I think that goes for men as well as women. But it's a men's world so it stand to reason that some of them think they are excluded from this. And that goes for some women as well. But why try to look your best if it didn't matter?

well, humans have separated sex and procreation, therefore we have to look at it a bit differently today: if we dress up, we don't do it to get fertilized but to get laid. :)

Get fertilised ! LOL. That's a very graphic expression. No, I can imagine that is not the ultimate reason. But to look your best is to look attractive to others, be it for sex or just as a normal course of action. Can't say I see anything wrong with that.

You got that right, honey. Getting fertilized requires the extended set of accessories!
