Sri Lanka police detain young couples for kissing
Wednesday, 9 June 2010

Sri Lanka has a conservative attitude towards public displays of affection

Police in two Sri Lankan towns have detained nearly 200 young couples they accuse of indecent behaviour.

Locals complained the young lovers were kissing, cuddling or simply holding hands, reports say. In the central town of Kurunegala about 350 youngsters have been detained and reprimanded in the past two weeks. Police have gone further in another town — Matara in the south — where 22 allegedly offending couples are to appear before a magistrate on Friday.

Unacceptable

Police in Kurunegala say ordinary townsfolk have been getting increasingly annoyed and embarrassed by what they feel is indecent behaviour by hundreds of young people. The town is a major centre of students and reports say lots of them have been hanging around in public parks and bus stands. In rural and provincial Sri Lanka kissing and cuddling in public is seen as unacceptable — however much the capital city may be racing towards Westernisation, says the BBC's Charles Haviland in Colombo.

In Kurunegala many of the girls involved are said to be school students aged only about 15. The police say this is why they have conducted a sweep and detained 350 offending youngsters, later taking them to their parents with a warning that if there is a repeat they may face tougher measures.

In the southern town of Matara, police detained 22 couples on a beach before releasing them on bail to appear in court on Friday.

Sri Lanka launches local pornstar manhunt
By Shihar Aneez
9 November 2010

COLOMBO (Reuters) - Sri Lankan newspapers on Tuesday published pictures of mainly women police said had acted in locally produced pornographic films, part of a court-ordered crackdown and the latest sign of growing social conservatism.

Police have identified 83 people they say have acted in the films found on websites, and got a court order to have media outlets publish their pictures to help locate the suspects. "This is illegal and we need them to be identified for investigations," police spokesman Priyashanth Jayakody said.

The move is part of a crackdown on pornography in the Indian Ocean nation of 21 million. The Telecommunication Regulatory Commission has already blocked around 100 porn sites and police have been arresting people with porn in their mobile phones.

Sri Lanka is a Buddhist majority nation, which also has Hindus, Muslims and Christians, and traditional values and more liberal social norms have generally co-existed well during its modern history. But there have been growing signs of conservatism. There is a movement within a faction of President Mahinda Rajapaksa's government to ban alcohol, which has been resisted by the tourist industry which stands to lose revenue as it is rebuilding after the end of a three-decade civil war in May 2009.

In March, Sri Lanka refused a visa to the Senegalese-American R&B singer and rapper Akon to perform in Colombo after Buddhists protested over a video in which he appeared briefly showed scantily clad women dancing in front of a Buddha statue.

Hundreds of people stormed the head office of Sri Lanka's largest private broadcaster, which was the media sponsor for the Akon concert, in the ensuing uproar.

Sri Lankan MP outed by Wikileaks says government is out to get him
24 January 2014

Sri Lankan MP Mangala Samaraweera says the ruling party is out to get him for splitting from the Sri Lankan Freedom Party (SLFP) and says they are using false accusations of sodomy by a thief who robbed his home to try to destroy him.

The man accused of burglarizing Samaraweera’s home was arrested last week but was soon out on bail and President’s Counsel Hemantha Warnakulasuriya, a former ambassador and political appointee of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, has been hired to defend him.

The thief and the thief’s wife are both claiming that he has been in a long term relationship with Samaraweera and police have reportedly opened an investigation.

Sri Lanka has a colonial era law making homosexuality a crime punishable with up to 12 years in prison but it is rarely enforced and Samaraweera says the investigation is to punish him for creating his own breakaway wing of the SLFP.

‘Having failed in successive witch hunts to discredit me since I parted company with the President in 2007, the Rajapaka regime seems to have embarked on yet another attempt to incarcerate and silence me by preparing to invoke an archaic Victorian law of the Sri Lankan penal code against me,’ Samaraweera wrote in the Colombo Telegraph earlier this week. 'The cat burglar who was caught red handed by the police on New Year’s Eve with some alcohol stolen from my house and confessed in the Police statement to breaking into my house forcibly has now been turned into a ‘star’ by the state media and the state sponsored private media. This young man, an occasional casual hand in my household until he was admitted to a drug rehabilitation center some time ago by his family has now been brought in front of the cameras to hurl obnoxious and baseless allegations against me in keeping with the conspiracy to invoke Section 365A of the penal code which has never been utilized in recent times.

‘My private life, though private has never been a secret. My mother, my family and friends as well as most of my Parliamentary colleagues including my constituents whom I have represented with love and dedication for the last 25 years have appreciated my honesty and for never allowing my private life to get in the way of public service. However, today the Rajapaksa regime, in preparation for provincial elections to be followed by Presidential elections seems to be hell bent on destroying me using the confused hallucinations of a misguided youth.’

Sections of the Sri Lankan media recently discovered a leaked US consular report published on the Wikileaks website from 2004 which claims he is gay.

‘Mangala SAMARAWEERA, 47, is the new Minister of Ports and Aviation,’ the cable reads. ‘A former academic, Samaraweera attended the University of London and is openly homosexual. He is Sinhalese Buddhist.’

Sri Lanka sacks officials over sex scandal
27 May 2015

Colombo (AFP) - Sri Lankan cricket's governing body on Wednesday announced the sacking of three officials after allegations that members of the women's national team were asked to perform sexual favours to keep their places.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said all three officials were shown the door at the end of their contracts last month after an internal inquiry found two of them guilty of sexual harassment and a third of improper conduct. The board said in a statement that "there was no evidence of any physical intimacy" by any of the three men, none of whom have been named.

But the investigation had nevertheless determined that "there have been a few incidents of sexual harassment which were committed by two male officials" and that the third was guilty of "improper conduct... which did not amount to sexual harassment," the SLC added.

Sri Lanka's sports ministry said at the weekend that criminal prosecutions would follow after its own inquiry had found two team managers demanded sexual favours from team members. Under Sri Lankan law, anyone found guilty of sexual harassment can face up to five years in prison plus an unspecified fine.

The board said both its own report and the separate inquiry by the sports ministry had highlighted the "unsatisfactory situation" involving the women's team where there was "favouritism and bias". "Both reports have commented adversely on the failure to ensure that a female manager handles the women's cricket team," SLC said, adding that they will take appropriate action to "rectify" management issues.

Despite the sports ministry's weekend announcement, no charges have been brought against any official so far. An independent panel was asked by the ministry last November to investigate local media allegations that unidentified players were dropped from the team for refusing to have sex with sports officials.

Sri Lanka's Children's Minister Rosy Senanayake, who is also responsible for women's issues, told reporters in Colombo on Saturday that she was closely following the case. "It is a shameful incident," Senanayake said. "We want to put a stop to this kind of behaviour." She said she was closely monitoring the progress of the case and wanted the perpetrators brought to justice.

Cricket is hugely popular in Sri Lanka and the women's team are regulars in major international tournaments.
