Thai ex-wife of murdered Brit gets life
BANGKOK - A former Thai bar girl and three of her relatives were sentenced to life in prison Wednesday for the murder and dismemberment of the woman's British ex-husband, Thailand court officials said.

Toby Charnaud was beaten to death last year with clubs and an iron bar after being lured to central Thailand by Pannada Charnaud Laorueang, the 41-year-old's ex-wife, who had asked him to collect the couple's child.

His attackers first tried to shoot him but their ancient flintlock rifle misfired and they beat him to death instead, prosecutor Boonchoo Yensabai said.

Charnaud's murderers then cut his body into pieces, which they cooked on a fire and buried throughout Kaeng Kracharn National Park, according to police.

Pannada, 35, who was not present at the killing, was given a life sentence along with three family members who carried out the attack, court officials said.
The four had been sentenced to death but had their punishments reduced after testifying in court during their trial.

"The judge found that the four suspects had committed the crime of premeditated murder and concealing the body, but during the hearing they had given some useful information and the court decided to reduce the death sentences to life imprisonment," the verdict said.

All four intend to appeal, Boonchoo said, adding that they felt the verdict was "too severe." Two other suspects were acquitted because of a lack of evidence.

Media reports said that Charnaud had written a prize-winning short story about a British expatriate living in Thailand who dies at the hands of his Thai girlfriend after a series a betrayals.

The story, which was submitted to a Bangkok magazine, closely mirrored the end of Charnaud's own life, which began to crumble after his wife's gambling habit spun out of control and they divorced in 2003.

"An in-depth investigation found evidence that Pannada was gambling and had committed adultery," Boonchoo said.
He said that after the divorce the courts granted Charnaud custody of the couple's son, and that this triggered a bitter dispute with Pannada, who could only visit with the child occasionally.

In March 2005, a remarried Charnaud was summoned by Pannada to get their son, but he disappeared after traveling to see her.

A private investigation ordered by Charnaud's family later led to the police inquiry that uncovered his murder, media reports said.

According to court testimony, the pair met when Pannada was working as a bar girl in the capital. They married in 1997 before returning to England and working on Charnaud's father's farm.
Less than two years later they moved back to Thailand and bought a bar and golf resort in the beach town of Hua Hin, south of Bangkok, according to press reports.

Sounds like she didn't like the farm life very much. Too much hard work, easier to stand in a bar or lay down to make money, I guess.

Heard this kind of thing a lot when I was in Thailand. I've made a new topic for it under Out and About : http://www.talkaboutsexxx.com/viewtopic.php?t=178

Well, that sure isn't on the tourist brochures, I bet.

I thought about taking a trip to Thailand to have some sun and fun, because, even though I have that here, the reputation of the Thai girls is that they're friendlier and not so stuck up as the American girls and women I see here.

Perhaps it would be a good idea to do some more research before booking. There are a lot of Thai women here too, and Thai restaurants are springing up everywhere.

Pattaya tourist deaths - more than accident?

Ever since I spent more than a year in Thailand, mostly in Pattaya, otherwise known as The Armpit Of Asia, I have been amused, astounded, and more than a little concerned about the number of tourist deaths in the land of smiles (as the Thailand Tourist Organisation likes to promote it) and especially in Pattaya itself. The second favourite term used by the Tourist Association is "Amazing Thailand", and it became one that I, and many other foreign men with me, uttered at least several times a day, usually not in a positive sense.

After only a few months there, and being an avid reader of anything local, while trying to get acquainted with Thailand, I began to notice a regular occurence in the local English language newspapers of tourist deaths. Besides the occasional muggings and even killings of tourists, which occur in any city anywhere in the world, Pattaya seemed to specialise in a particular brand of tourist suicide - "The Fall Off The High Rise Apartment (Condo) Balcony".

Invariably, the following common theme elements emerged:
1. The suicide "victim" was always a foreign man.
2. He was usually very drunk when it happened.
3. Often he was naked.
4. Police find a Thai female in the room who claims nothing was wrong between them, she doesn't understand it, and, of course, had nothing to do with it.
5. The body, according to Buddhist customs, is burned within 24 hrs, making any forensic investigation moot.
6. The family back home isn't notified until the body has already been burned.
7. The Thai police invariably rules it as suicide and closes the case.

The following posts are from local and Thai newspapers. Make up your own mind.

Victor

Cause of Finnish tourist"s death unsolved

Medical examiner hasn"t ruled out foul play

Boonlua Chatree

Suon Peraaki, a 50-year old tourist from Finland, was found dead on the bathroom floor of his Soi 8 Pattaya hotel room on April 23. Next to his body, a broken sink was stained with blood and water was still draining from the broken pipe connection.

When police arrived, his "girlfriend for the night" was passed out on the floor next to the bed, lying in a pool of water draining from the busted sink in the bathroom. The unconscious woman was totally oblivious to the pool of water collecting around her body. Police, unable to revive her, placed her on the bed.

Police investigators and Banglamung medical examiner Dr. Chiraphan Ittisuknan examined the body and found a long laceration under the right arm, with two smaller cuts and bruises on the rib cage below.

The medical examiner said the longer of the wounds was deep and probably severed a main artery. The body was transferred to the police forensic lab for further examination.

Dr. Chiraphan surmised that Peraaki might possibly have been murdered, contrary to what appeared to be a slip in the bathroom, because the broken sink didn"t appear to have any edges sharp enough or pointed enough to pierce so deep into the body.

Later, when the woman in the room finally came to, police questioned her and found out the two had been bar hopping the previous night and ended up extremely intoxicated. The 40-year old woman, identified as Khaek Intharwichai from Udorn, told police she passed out on the floor as soon as she entered the room and remembers nothing that happened after.

And another (notice the Thai translation of the title - shouldn't it be "Father looking for deceased son" instead of "Deceased father looking for son"? Someone's been watching Night Of The Living Death too much:

------------------------------
American consul looking into tourist death

Deceased father looking for son

On November 10th, an American Consular officer met with officers from the Pattaya Police"s International Crimes Unit to inquire about details in the death of US citizen Terry Watkins, 43.

The consul, Mr. Paul Meyer, told officers that he had received a call from Mr. Watkins" worried father. Mr. Watkins told the consul that his son had not arrived back in the United States on schedule and all attempts to find him had failed.

Contacting the Pattaya Police and learning that Terry Watkins was dead, the consul came to investigate the causes and collect his valuables to send back to the family.

Police Major Thitipong Sukhthien, the Inspector on Duty at the time, told the consul that on November 7th, the Banglamung police were called to the Beverly Plaza Hotel.

Police told the consul they found Mr. Watkins dead in his room. He was bleeding from his nose and mouth. There were no signs of struggle, nothing was taken from the room and the body showed no signs of physical abuse. The man had been dead for no less than 7 hours.

Officers found prescription medications for a number of medical conditions and a box of prescription syringes in packages.

Police sent the body for autopsy but as they could not ascertain the cause of death, did not notify the US Embassy immediately.

Swede falls to his death from Pattaya condo

Intoxicated Swedish resident accidentally falls to his death

PATTAYA: Sixty one year old Swedish national Lennart Bror Torstad was found dead on the ground floor parking lot of Rung Fa Condominium after he accidentally fell from the 8th floor through the kitchen window.

The deceased"s girlfriend, Buasri Youngchanin, aged 32, told police that they had been living together for about 6 months and had recently moved in the condominium. Buasri said Lennart was scheduled to return to Sweden on April 19th. She said Lennart was a nice and charming man but on the night of the accident he drank so much alcohol he could barely control himself.

Buasri also said Lennart watched TV alone in the room before she fell asleep. When she woke up and did not see Lennart in the living room she went to check in the kitchen. She said she was in deep shock when she saw the kitchen window was broken and Lennart was lying in the parking lot.

Buasri told police that perhaps Lennart tried to get to the refrigerator for some water in the kitchen but unfortunately slipped out of the glass window, since the window was installed in a risky position.

Lennart Torstad"s body was transferred to the forensic department for a post mortem examination.

And another. It's not only the men that are victim of the Thai :

Alleged rape and murder of a British tourist on Thailand's resort Samui island, Bualoy Phothisit, 23, is escorted by Thai policemen upon his arrival criminal court in Suratthani province, southern Thailand, Friday 13 January 2006.The two fishermen were sentenced to death on Wednesday for the rape and murder of British student Katherine Horton after an unusually short trial and sustained political pressure. EPA/-

Bangkok - A Thai provincial court on Wednesday sentenced two Thai fishermen to death for the rape and murder of British tourist Katherine Horton earlier this month in a court case that lasted less than a week.

Surat Thani Provincial Chief Judge Pongsak Takulsin said the death sentence was appropriate for the accused, Bualoy Phothisit, 23, and Wichai Somkhaoyai, 24, because of the brutal nature of the murder and its negative impact on Thailand's reputation.

'The court considers that the forensic evidence could not be disputed that the two suspects brutally committed the serious crimes,' Pongsak said. 'To prevent others from committing similar crimes, the court rules that the two defendants be sentenced to death.'

Bualoy and Wichai had pleaded 'no contest' to the charges when their trial opened on January 12, reportedly in the hope of getting a reduced sentence. They have one month to appeal their death sentences.

Horton, 21, was allegedly raped by the two men on January 1 while vacationing at Samui, an island off Surat Thani province situated about 450 kilometres south of Bangkok.

The two men confessed to beating Horton unconscious, raping her, beating her again and then dumping her body in Lamai Bay.

According to a police statement, the accused had swum ashore from their fishing trawler, drunk and aroused from watching pornographic videos, when they spotted Horton as she was walking down the beach chatting on a hand phone with her mother in Wales.

Horton's mother Elizabeth reportedly requested that the court not sentence her daughter's murderers to death but the court chose otherwise.

Judge Pongsak cited the fact that the victim of the murder was a foreigner as another reason for not reducing the sentence.

Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra last week said the culprits, if proven guilty, should be handed the 'maximum sentence.' In Thailand the death penalty is now carried out by lethal injection.

'The unusual speed in the prosecution of this high-profile case raises concerns that the individuals may not have had time to mount an adequate defence and the statement by the prime minister prior to the trial calling for death penalty had the potential to influence the fairness of this trail,' said the international human rights group Amnesty International in a statment.

Amnesty also raised questions about whether the two accused fishermen had pleaded guilty without coercion from authorities, who have been under pressure to demonstrate that Thailand is a safe destination for foreign tourists.

Horton is the fourth British tourist to be murdered in Thailand over the past five years.

British nationals Adam Lloyd, 25, and Vanessa Arscott, 24, were shot dead on September 9, 2004, in Kachanaburi province by Thai Police Sergeant Somchai Wisetsingh.

Somchai got life imprisonment.

British tourist Kristy Jones was allegedly raped and murdered in Chiang Mai in the year 2004. Her murderer was never caught.

Killer Pattaya Prostitutes
By Leonard Calcagno

A half-drunk and drugged big blonde Dane wakes up relieved of $500 US. Last thing he remembers is that this beautiful Thai prostitute gave him a pill with her tongue, telling him it was an aphrodisiac. He was a lucky bastard; last week two Germans were found naked and dead in their hotel room. Their personal effects were never found by the police. Not even the hotel owner remembers if they came in with somebody.

Most of the tourists in Pattaya, Thailand come for the same thing: sex for cheap. But cases of prostitutes stealing everything from their drunk clients were not uncommon. This time, something about the case didn"t wash. The coroner determined that both men died of heart attacks at approximately the same time in the same room.

These deaths, and a number that followed, began making international headlines, and the sex tourist industry shrank. The stories were becoming common: some beautiful Thai slipped in an "aphrodisiac" or asks the client to lick her breasts. And that"s pretty much the last thing anyone remembers. Usually they would be relieved of wallet and watch. But now, johns were being killed off instead.

Police in Pattaya were convinced that the local mafia was using prostitutes to lure, rob tourist and kill them. Working with INTERPOL, local police began combing the areas that the tourists were found dead or unconscious. The south of Pattaya is where the most of the prostitute bars are. European [re: white] agents began visiting these bars undercover. It's not the first time that Thai and European police have worked together. A porno cartel dealing pedophilia was busted by Dutch and Scandinavian police a couple of years ago.

South Pattaya is where every bar has girls waiting in the door, bringing customers for cheap sex and beer. In every bar, naked girls are trained to be bait for sex tourists. Most of the "beer bars" are decorated in a cheap Christmas version of a high school beach party -- but with a hundred horny drunken tourists looking and touching underage smiling merchandise. The message parlors are filled with girls who specialize in everything for the right price: $5 US; And for a little extra, they"ll go to your hotel, too.

The Marine

The biggest beer bar is The Marine: two big dance floors and a dozen live show booths, each with a couple of girls scrammed in waiting for customers. In this ocean of horny tourists, police waited for 3 weeks before a Thai prostitute with mafia connections came in contact with one of them.

In a corner of the bar, there"s a drunken German tourist with 10 girls, talking loudly and paying for drinks without a care in the world. He's tall, blue-eyed and full of golden jewelry, just waiting to be robbed. In the other corner policemen have spotted a group of Thais looking him over and sending girls over to him. They let the drunken German leave with the girls, and the next day the police get a report from him saying that he was drugged and robbed.

For two months the police go to The Marine and always hear the same story. Nobody is killed though; the police follow the stupid tourists for it's safety after they leave the bar, but they needed proof for a murder rap. Finally, an undercover officer flush with cash gets surrounded by The Marine bar girls until mafia thugs send their two most beautiful girls to suggest a sex-crazed night in a local hotel. Accepting the invitation, the cop directs the other police officers to the hotel.

As the trio get to the room and the two prostitutes get naked, they ask the cop to take the so-called "aphrodisiac." The police bust into the room and arrest the two prostitutes, confiscating the pill. They also arrest the four people waiting in the car and the gang in The Marine waiting for other suckers.

One of the prostitutes, a 16-year-old girl, confessed about the killing going around Pattaya and how she and her cohorts drug tourists, rob them and the gang kills them. They confess using different methods to drug the johns. After he has consumed the pill, powder or liquid, it takes 10 to 20 minutes to slip into a heavy coma-like sleep. Many johns end up dying of heart attacks.

About 75 to 100 tourists are found dead every year in Pattaya, some from an overdose, heart attack, fights and some still in bizarre circumstance. I guess it"s the price to pay for cheap sex in a land where sexual exploitation is the main product to sell.

Here's an older article about the above - from 1997

Image

Knock out nipples

Five women and a man were arrested by Thai police in a sting operation after a spate of fatal and near-fatal druggings in which tourists passed out after licking prostitutes' nipples. The gang admitted druggings in Pattaya and Bangkok over several months in 1996, although they denied being involved in the deaths of at least 45 tourist from drug overdoses in Pattaya during the year.

Amorn Saiyakul, at 19 the youngest prostitute in the gang, told police about three ways she was taught to administer the knockout drug. "The easiest was to drop the drug in the drink. That usually worked. But if there was no drink available I could pass it on by placing it under my tongue and very quickly giving the man a deep kiss. If they complained, I told them it was an aphrodisiac. The third way was to rub it on my nipples and let the tourist suck on them. They took about 20 minutes to pass out."

Among the gang's victims were three Austrians who slept through Christmas after being drugged at the Thai Garden Hotel in Pattaya. One of them claimed he was robbed of cash and gold worth £17,500. Last October, an American tourist woke 24 hours after being drugged, also having lost his possessions. He said the last he remembered was sucking on a nipple.

Meanwhile, police in Bangkok investigated the heart-attack deaths of two Swedes, aged 32 and 35, in a rundown hotel over the New Year. "They had been drinking," said a policeman, "but it is beyond coincidence that two men in their 30s should have died simultaneously of heart attacks."

The breast sucking trick is nothing new. In 1992, four transsexuals were arrested for picking up Thai customers and tourists outside Bangkok's Regent Hotel and knocking them out with tranquillisers in drinks, on chocolates or smeared on nipples before robbing them. Upjohn Halcyon tranquillisers were used, the same brand favoured by American serial killer Geoffrey Dahmer. Both in 1992 and in the current run of muggings, police believe that there were many other victims who were too embarrassed to come forward. For an earlier report, see FT72:9.

LOL, Seb, there's no stopping hormones, is there?

During my time in Thailand I certainly did see a number of happy couples too, don't doubt it. And, although many girls are in it for the money and are willing to do just about anything for it, many have also become heartless and calculating, partly because of all the empty promises of love and a good life they have had only to be disappointed time and time again, only to have to face life at the bar again, hoping the next one to be more sincere, and eventually becoming uncaring in the process.

Thai society and especially Thai family bonds are very strong and girls are taught to think of the family first. It is their duty and mission in life to help provide for the family in any way they can. And if that includes selling your body so be it.

So there is more than one side to this story.

From what I understand the Thai girls do not work for a pimp and they are not seen prostitutes in that way either. They are free to go or stay as they like and do not have to pay anyone for going home with a guy. The bar gets a few dollars for business lost but the girl can stay away as long or as short as she likes.

I do not know if I would want to go there, sounds like a lot of diseases going on with this kind of thing.

Wow, Victor. Those women there sound real dangerous! I mean, what's a young and hot guy to do? You want to have good sex and they're willing? And of course you like a beer or two before you get down with the little lady.

I still wanna go, I don't care, sounds HOT !!

Farangs go home

Posted to Visa Run on September 14, 2006 by

Discouraging foreigners from residing or investing here is a big vote-winner in xenophobic Thailand so it comes as no surprise that, as the election draws closer, the populist (but unpopular) Thaksin administration is announcing ever-stricter curbs on us.

This week's scrapping of the popular investment visa means that those foreigners willing to invest a few million baht or more in Thailand are no longer guaranteed entry. If your investment happens to be a condo purchased as a permanent home, this could prove inconvenient to say the least.

When you consider how capricious the Thai Government can be, belated assurances that existing investment visas will be renewed don't exactly inspire confidence.

Only a mug would buy a condo without a rock-solid guarantee that he could actually live there so I feel sorry for those who were hoodwinked into paying (or, in many cases, overpaying) for one. The second-hand market is flat enough as it is without having to cope with plunging demand.

At least they're not in the same mess as foreigners who purchased houses through a company structure and who now find themselves in legal limbo after the practice was retrospectively declared illegal a few months ago.

The outright ban on foreigners owning land here is a bit rich considering that many of Thaksin's anxious cronies have already purchased luxury hideouts in Europe and America.

Also announced this week was a crackdown on consecutive thirty-day entry stamps. Three in a row will now get you banned from re-entering Thailand for ninety days.

"Permanent tourists" still have the option to wait in line for sixty-day tourist visas at the already overstretched Thai consulates in neighbouring countries but the real losers are the genuine tourists who enjoy, say, one weekend a month in Thailand or perhaps want to use the country as a hub to explore the region.

When they arrive at Bangkok airport for the fourth time, they'll be turned away like common criminals.

Of course, they could always apply for a tourist visa in advance but, personally, I'd be inclined to save myself fifty bucks and two time-consuming visits to a Thai consulate by taking my weekend breaks somewhere more welcoming.

The reasons for these new anti-foreigner measures are pretty transparent.

The investment restrictions appear to be a knee-jerk reaction to hysterical media reports about Koh Samui being bought up by evil foreign motorcycle gangs.

Stamping out the endemic official corruption that enables foreign criminals to operate with impunity is clearly an impossible task. Instead, the Thai Government has made the token gesture of closing an irrelevant legal loophole.

If foreign criminals can't buy development land though a company, they'll simply buy it through a Thai accomplice. The only people actually affected by this crackdown are the thousands law-abiding foreigners whose only "crime" is to have bought a house in Thailand.

The restrictions on border runs were announced just weeks after the high-profile arrest of paedophile, John Mark Karr, but it's another exercise in futility. Applying for a tourist visa is no more challenging that filling out a landing card so criminals and paedophiles can continue to come and go as they please.

There's no payoff at all. Despite the huge increase in red tape, Thailand's borders remain as porous as ever.

These new policies inflict considerable hassle, worry and expense on law-abiding foreigners but offer no tangible benefits in return - except for the Thaksin administration who can now claim credit for taking tough (but pointless) action against us without upsetting local vested interests or spending a single baht of public money.

Coming in the same week as talk of a failed military coup, it's clear that maintaining the confidence of foreign investors is less important than dreaming up cheap gimmicks to save Thaksin's skin.

Personally, I wouldn't invest any of my money in Thailand and I've structured my life here so that, if things go tits up, I won't lose anything except a few nick-nacks. The removable hard drive goes in my pocket and we catch the next flight to Kuala Lumpur.
