Chav porn joins list of Britain's most popular sex searches for first time
By Jasper Hamill

Class war: Vicky Pollard is one of the television industry's most famous depictions of a 'chav'

A shocking new class of pornography called "chav porn" is becoming wildly popular in the UK, new stats have revealed.

The world's most visited smut site has released an annual rundown which shows that large numbers of British people are now looking for porn featuring "chavs", a word which is becoming increasingly unacceptable. Last year, more than twice as many people searched Pornhub for the term "British chav" as they did in 2014. It is now the 9th most popular sex search term in the country, leaping 23 places.

The word chav is now widely accepted to be a term used to "demonize the working class". It is often used by posh people looking to denigrate the culture, fashion and behaviour of poorer people. The Pornhub stats do not reflect the social class of the people who search for pornography, although it seems unlikely that working class communities would search for sex videos using a word which is used to deride them.

Britain to make porn sites check that users are at least 18
17 July 2017

LONDON (AP) -- The British government says that starting next year pornography websites will have to verify that their users are at least 18.

The government says that from April 2018 websites will have to show they are blocking access by minors, possibly by making users supply credit-card details. A regulator will have the power to fine those that fail to comply. The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children says the move will protect young people from "deeply damaging" imagery.

But the Open Rights Group says the rule may let websites build up databases of users' personal information and porn habits. Executive director Jim Killick said Monday that the information "could be vulnerable to Ashley Madison-style hacks." In 2015, hackers stole details of millions of users of the infidelity website.

Irish PM: 'Matter of time' for N. Ireland and gay marriage
5 August 2017

LONDON (AP) -- Ireland's prime minister says it is "only a matter of time" before same-sex marriage is legalized in Northern Ireland - the only part of the United Kingdom where it still is banned.

Prime Minister Leo Varadkar, Ireland's first openly gay leader, made the comments at a gay pride event on Saturday in Belfast.

Northern Ireland remains the only part of the British Isles where same-sex marriages are not allowed. A 2015 voter referendum legalized them in the republic of Ireland. The issue has been one of the sticking points preventing the restoration of the Catholic-Protestant power-sharing government in Northern Ireland. The Democratic Unionists, Northern Ireland's biggest British Protestant party and a key partner to British Prime Minister Theresa May's government, has opposed same-sex marriage. The Catholic nationalist Sinn Fein supports it.

Child sex convictions spark UK debate about race and abuse
By JILL LAWLESS
10 August 2017

LONDON (AP) -- Britain is wrestling with a volatile nexus of crime, race and religion, after 18 people were convicted of sexually abusing women and girls as young as 15.

One woman and 17 men were convicted of, or admitted, to charges including rape, supplying drugs and inciting prostitution in a series of trials that ended this week at Newcastle Crown Court in northeast England.

The crimes follow a pattern that has become grimly familiar from cases across Britain in the last few years. The convicted men mostly come from South Asian Muslim backgrounds. Their victims - who were plied with drugs and alcohol before being abused at parties, in taxis or in back rooms - are mostly white.

The prosecution of child-grooming gangs in Rochdale, Rotherham, Oxford and now Newcastle has raised uncomfortable questions. Some allege that the crimes were long ignored by authorities afraid they would be branded racist or fearful the allegations might inflame ethnic tensions. Sarah Champion, a British lawmaker from Rochdale, said Thursday that the causes of abuse weren't being tackled "because people are more afraid to be called a racist than they are afraid to be wrong about calling out child abuse."

Ken Macdonald, Britain's former chief prosecutor, said some of the blame lay with particular communities who regarded "vulnerable and disordered young girls (as) just opportunities for sexual abuse." "It is a disease of racism and sexism that will not abate until it is confronted culturally in homes, schools and places of worship as a question of dignity, respect and equal rights," he said.

The recent high-profile cases aren't typical of all child sexual abuse. Most abused children are victimized online, at home or in institutions such as schools, and most of the perpetrators are white men. Police say that in the year to October 2015, 12 percent of offenders in child sexual exploitation cases were from South Asian backgrounds, and 59 percent were white.

But former prosecutor Nazir Afzal, who brought the Rochdale abuse gang to trial, says Pakistani men are disproportionately involved in the sort of "street grooming" seen in Newcastle. He says factors may include sexist attitudes to women and other "cultural baggage," and the large number of South Asian men working in the nocturnal economy. "These young girls are invariably looking for warmth, for transport, for food, for mind-numbing substances," he said. "The predators are hiding among the takeaway workers and taxi drivers."

Some experts say the focus on South Asian perpetrators masks how widespread child sexual abuse is, and overlooks the fact that victims are often ignored by authorities because of their youth and troubled backgrounds. Helen Beckett, an expert on child sexual exploitation from the University of Bedfordshire, said focusing on one ethnic group risked missing other patterns of abuse. "The emphasis that we've had on (abuse) being perpetrated by Asian males means that that is often what we are looking for, and therefore are more likely to find," she said. "We know child sexual exploitation takes so many different forms."

Since the Rochdale case shocked the nation in 2012, police and lawyers have worked hard to prosecute grooming gangs - though some police tactics have drawn criticism. A child welfare group expressed alarm at a police decision in Newcastle to pay a convicted child rapist to act as an informant. Steve Ashman, head of the Northumbria Police force, acknowledged that paying a convicted pedophile "may appear repugnant," but said his information had been crucial to convicting the gang. He said police had "thrown the kitchen sink" at the crime of child sex abuse, deploying 50 officers for more than three years in an operation that has netted 93 convictions, including the ones this week.

Afzal said there had been progress, but that much more needs to be done. "You turn over a stone and you will find this kind of behavior pretty much everywhere in this country," he said. "The demography might change but the behavior remains the same. Where there are available and vulnerable young girls, and boys, there are predators. "There is no community where women and girls are safe. None."

Hundreds descend on sleepy middle class town for woodland sex festival featuring S&M dungeon and 'adult play pen'
By Gabriel Shepard and Joshua Taylor
17 August 2017

Hundreds of kinky revellers are descending on a sleepy English town for a sex festival featuring an S&M dungeon, an 'adult play pen' run by dominatrixes and bondage wrestling workshops.

Flamefest17 in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent, will also host lessons in erotic writing, fetish play equipment, luxury hot tubs, sword-swallowing and "human hungry hippos". The event, for which partygoers have paid £300 to stay in luxury boutique tents, will include dance DJs playing into the early hours, Kent Live reported .

Photography is banned inside the festival and the website says about the dress code: "Festival wear and fetish wear will go down well, but bear in mind that nudity is only permitted in the adult play marquee." And the website adds: "Sex, nudity and BDSM activities are STRICTLY confined to the adult play marquee and your tent."

Flamefest17 in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent, promises an 'adult play pen' and lessons in bondage wrestling - but residents are worried about noise and the parking situation. Publicity material advertising the event says: "Get back to nature and rediscover your wild side with DJs, live music, extreme performances, movie nights, daytime workshops, ridiculous games, an adult play area and steamy outdoor hot tubs." Referring to what is on offer, it adds: "Our outdoor dungeon is discreetly secluded, furnished with fetish play equipment and monitored by our friendly assistants. Explore pain, experience pleasure and fulfil your fantasies on this mystical site, where witches' covens have met for centuries."

But people living in the area have expressed concern over noise, parking and decency - and claim they had not be consulted about the event. Kent councillor Dianne Hill said she had received "a lot" of complaints. "I'm no prude but this is the wrong place for this sort of thing," she said. "It's a residential area. A big worry is they say there will be coaches coming down - where are they going to park? People are obviously going to be concerned about the noise."

Cllr Hill said residents had not been aware the event was taking place because it was being held on a temporary licence. This, she explained, meant it did not need to be approved by a council licensing committee.

Event manager Helen Smedley said it was "a private event" and insisted no sex would be on show to the public. She said: "It'll involve music, workshops, getting at one with nature. We've got guests coming from all over Kent. We've had someone fly in from Romania and Australia. We allow people the safe place to have sex, we're monitors, just to make sure everyone's safe. There's nothing that happens in view, on site. People go off to their tents to meet like minded people."
