Sex not over in old age, British study shows
30 January 2015

Rome (ANSA) - Old age does not necessarily spell the end of sex, a University of Manchester study of 7,000 elderly people and published on the Archives of Sexual Behavior showed Friday.

More than one in two men (54%) and one in three women (31%) aged over 70 said they are sexually active, with one third of the respondents saying they have sex at least twice a month.

'Silver porn' shows fifty shades of greying Japan
April 2, 2015

Image
Yasue Tomita

Tokyo (AFP) - Dressed in a kimono and kneeling silently on a tatami mat floor, 61-year-old Yasue Tomita looks as if she might be about to perform a Japanese tea ceremony -- instead she's debuting as a porn actress.

Fluttering her eyelashes demurely as the cameras prepare to roll, Tomita is proof that in Japan's greying society you're never too old to chase your dreams, however racy or unorthodox. She has also become part of a flourishing niche market in Japan: "silver porn" -- stretching the limits of eroticism among the elderly and overturning social norms in a country where people are expected to grow old gracefully.

Love, too, is not confined to the young, say Japan's growing army of pensioners exploring their desires in more conventional ways, with dating agencies for the elderly reporting increasingly brisk business. Tomita confessed to being "a bit rusty" but made no apologies for her rambunctious lust for life, or her decision to put aside her knitting and crochet and launch into a career making X-rated movies. "I like my handicrafts but I wanted to try my hand at this, while my body still works," she told AFP before filming began. "I do like sex, and this is my last chance before I get too old. I'm very nervous. I wonder if I should really do it, especially in front of so many people, but everyone should follow their dream.

"I just hope I can keep up," added Tomita, who used to work in a factory manufacturing car parts and registered for an agency in Japan's booming "adult video" (AV) industry with her daughter. "We applied through the Internet together. I got offered a job first, which surprised her a bit."

Forbidden pleasures

In ageing Japan, around 32 million people -- a quarter of the population -- are 65 or over. Thanks to a low birthrate and growing longevity, that proportion is expected to rise to 40 percent by 2060.

With statistics like that, it's no surprise that geronto-porn is big business. Adult movies rake in about $20 billion a year, and those featuring unashamedly wrinkly men and women account for between 20 and 30 percent of that market, industry insiders say. Sales have rocketed over the past decade as more of Japan's perky seniors celebrate their mojo. Though not for the faint-hearted, the genre took off thanks largely to now-80-year-old Shigeo Tokuda, the twinkle-toed king of granddad porn, who has peeled off for hundreds of hardcore flicks with titles such as "Forbidden Elderly Care" and "Manic Training of Lolitas."

Pornography became widely available in Japan in the 1900s, with seventeenth century Edo-era woodblock erotic prints being many people's first introduction to the genre. Attitudes towards sex are less prudish than in other parts of the world and fun-loving fertility festivals, where giant wooden phalluses are joyfully carried around towns, take place annually in parts of Japan.

"Everyone has different sexual tastes or fetishes," said director Fumiaki Kimura. "Elderly porn has become very popular over the past 10 years or so. Older couples watch together because they can feel a connection, a sense of closeness or familiarity, being the same age. "It's like a forbidden pleasure," he added. "Young people watch it because they're fed up with the regular stuff -- whatever turns you on. You do hear about actors taking Viagra, but that can be dangerous for the older guys." Tokuda, who beds actresses young enough to be his granddaughter, also co-starred with Fujiko Ito, just two years his junior, the pair frolicking in hot springs or on tatamis with Ito in a kimono.

Natsuko Kayama, 44, a porn star with 25 years' experience in the industry, told AFP she wanted to outlast the oldest swingers in town. "I'd love to be the oldest AV actress," she laughed. "I want to break the record if I can -- if I last that long."

Love, actually

Far away from the steamy film sets, others entering the autumn of their lives are simply interested in finding companionship, perhaps after losing or leaving their first long-term partner.

But with habits set, it isn't always easy to meet someone, and many turn to one of hundreds of matchmaking services catering to older clientele, such as the Ai-Senior company, which boasts a total of 6,000 registered members, some in their 90's. Later life dating hit the headlines last year with the grisly case of the "Black Widow" -- 68-year-old Chisako Kakehi, who was arrested in November accused of murdering her septuagenarian fourth husband with cyanide. Placing adverts for an "unattached elderly man with assets", she was said to have amassed millions of dollars in insurance and other payouts over 10 years as a result of the deaths of a string of spouses and lovers.

Most elderly daters, happily, have far more felicitous stories to tell. Yosuke Komori, 66, and his 57-year-old wife Mutsuko met through another dating agency. Both previously married, they wed four years ago and still hold hands like smitten teenagers. "I think a healthy sex life is an added bonus of marriage," said Mutsuko, who got married in a daringly short dress, to the horror of her daughters. "I think perhaps my husband is sufficiently confident in that department. But the most important thing in a relationship is mutual understanding." For bashful Yosuke, it was never only about the physical side of things. "I feel most contented when she is happy," he said sheepishly. "I don't want to sound soppy, but I just want to make her smile. What's important is love, actually."

More elderly Swedes enjoy an active sex life
4 March 2015
by Emma Löfgren

Is it possible to have a fulfilling sex life in your autumn years?

Swedes think so. New research shows older people are having more – and better – sex than ever before. Almost three times as many women in their 70s are sexually active today compared to 40 years ago, according to researcher Nils Beckman at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg.

"It's down to several factors. Today's 70-year-olds are healthier and generally more active. But also attitudes in society have changed and contraception is more widely available. Women today are more able to be in command of their own body," he told The Local.

And it’s not just 70-year-olds. The study also shows that Swedes even as old as 97 have not given up on their sexual feelings altogether. 26.7 percent of 97-year-old men and 4.7 percent of women said they still experienced passion, although only one person claimed to be sexually active. "Just as much as an 80-year-old is able to enjoy a good dinner, they can enjoy sexual contact," said Beckman.

In free-spirited modern Sweden, the figures have changed the most among women. 34 percent of women in their 70s reported an active sexual life today, compared to 12 percent in the 1970s. The number of sexually active men of the same age has gone up from 47 percent to 66 percent. "There's a myth that Sweden is very sexually liberated, but I think that's the result of a few well-published movies. If you look at American and European studies we're not that different from the rest of the western world," said Beckman.

The figures have not just risen in quantitative terms. Today’s silver foxes are having better sex than their 1970s counterparts. 62 percent of women and 71 percent of men told the study they found their sex life “highly satisfying”, compared to 41 and 58 percent, respectively, 40 years ago.

The Gothenburg study follows a trend of the breaking down of sexual taboos in Sweden, which is already known for its openness and tolerance. Sweden came in ninth in a YouGov poll from 2013 on what European nationalities had the best sex, just after France but before Finland. The Swiss rated themselves the highest in the survey, and the Brits ended up in a disappointing last place.

Just last week, The Local reported that changing norms and legislation has emboldened more and more Swedes to undergo sex changes – a clinic in Lund welcomed almost 100 patients last year compared to around ten when it opened in the 1970s. “We have a different kind of openness in society today,” Dr Attila Fazekas told broadcaster SVT at the time.

Woman aged 91 suffocated during sex game with married neighbour, 49
7 December 2015

A 91-year-old woman is believed to have suffocated during a sex game with a 49-year-old neighbour.

The OAP was found on her bed naked from her waist down next to a sex toy in Aveiro, 50 miles south of Porto, Portugal. A married dad-of-two living next door has been arrested after DNA analysis of semen recovered from the scene. He was released on bail after going before a judge who was told autopsy results showed she died from asphyxia thought to have taken place during a sex game that spiralled out of control.

The death is believed to be the result of a tragic accident, Portuguese newspaper Jornal de Noticias reported. The extensive genital injuries appear to have been caused by the object found near the body.

The neighbour who found her Ana Martins, said: "She was lying in the bed, naked from the waist down and with a vibrator. I noticed only two small bruises on her face, but there was blood on the sheets and a picture of her husband resting on her chest." The victim, who was a widow of a sailor, was "very active" and "liked to make jokes with men" added Ms Martins.

Another neighbour described the woman, who lived alone, as being “very active” despite her age and said the man often went round her house to do odd jobs. Police say there was no sign of a forced entry and nothing had been taken from the house.

Lonely pensioners fuel surge in sales of inflatable SEX DOLLS in China as they struggle to find new partners
By Qin Xie
5 December 2015

Hidden amongst the back streets and alleyways of Xi'an, north China, are around 2,000 adult shops.

Perhaps surprisingly, a growing number of their customer base is pensioners looking for blow up sex dolls, reported People's Daily Online. It's a growing trend that's also seen in other parts of the country.

Some of these aging men have been widowed while others have found that their wives are no longer interested in sex. Tragically, some of these men are also seeing these dolls as companions in life as they no longer have regular contact with their children.

Normal? Li (left) sits at his home in Xi'an, north China, with his blow up sex doll, which he uses as a companion

Image
Trend: Li is one of a number of pensioners in the city of Xi'an, China, who owns a blow up sex doll (pictured)

According to Feng, an adult shop owner who trades both online and at his numerous outlets in Xi'an, blow up sex dolls didn't arrive in the city until about 1998. At the time, they were lucky to sell 100 a year. But in recent years, a growing number of these dolls are being sold. Feng claims he now sells more than 1,000 of the dolls a year.

Typically, the consumer groups are broken down into curious youths, who buy the dolls online but don't use them much; middle-aged migrant workers or men in long distance relationships, who will use the dolls regularly; and widowers or pensioners living alone, who use the dolls regularly as well. In particular, Feng revealed that the pensioners will generally visit the shop to browse, which in turn allows them to easily return any unwanted products.

Factoring in other shops, online products and similar sex toys, the sales rate in the city of Xi'an alone is estimated to be more than 10,000 items a year. For the city's pensioners, the toys fill a need. QQ reported that a survey of those aged between 65 and 80 in China showed that 95 per cent still had sexual needs - and many of these were not being met.

Image
Growing tend: Feng says his adult business has seen the number of sex dolls sold up from 100 to 1,000 a year

For a 70-year-old man named as Li, a blow up doll is both a companion and a sex toy. Li's wife died three years ago and he rarely sees his children - his son works abroad while his daughter lives in another city. Most days, Li is at home on his own. Although he was introduced to a woman once, she didn't want to have sex and thought that Li was disgusting for making the suggestion. Her feelings echoes that of the wider society where many feel that once a person retires, their sex life should retire too. After talking with a friend, who also had a doll, Li decided to buy one for himself for around 1,000 Yuan (£100).

Image
Two markets: It's not just the men buying the dolls. Sometimes the wives buy the toys for their husbands

Li says he uses it perhaps a handful of times a year but most of the time, it's deflated and sits in a cupboard. Occasionally, however, he puts the doll out and dresses it in his late wife's clothing just to have a cup of tea.

Lonely widowers like Li are not uncommon. Although life expectancy has increased in China, those left behind don't always have the option of pairing up with new partners. As well as difficulty in finding a compatible partner, who is of the right age group, pensioners also have to deal with the objections of their children. This social phenomenon has also led to a growing number of pensions seeks love in the arms of prostitutes and other monetary based relationship.

Image
Not alone: As well as pensioners, curious youths and migrant workers also buy the dolls, according to Feng

But it's not just lonely widowers who resort to sex dolls. Another man in his sixties, named as Zhang, revealed that it was his wife who bought him the sex doll. He claims that when his wife reached her 50s, she no longer had a need for sex while the opposite was true for him. After repeated arguments over their sex life, his wife bought him a sex doll to appease him. Although initially angry, Zhang used the sex doll once when he was in need. Immediately afterwards, Zhang felt guilt and regret. The next time it happened, Zhang resorted to the toy and, again, he was left with regret. Zhang says that it has been a cycle of regret for him for the past few years.

Image
Complicated: Pensioners want to find someone compatible but their children have to agree to the union too

But it's not just Xi'an that's seen a growing number of pensioners resorting to blow up sex dolls. Although there are no nationwide sales figures for the toys, there have been a number of media reports regarding the growing trend of pensioners using blow up dolls, albeit, only when things go wrong.

Earlier this year, a man in Zhuzhou, central China, reported a fraud case concerning blow up sex dolls. The 67-year-old brought a doll, which looked nothing like the advert, and reported the incident to the police. Eventually, the case went to the courts but the verdict was never publicly announced.

For the adult shop owner Feng, it's clear why the use of such toys are rarely reported. He said: 'People are repressed about sex. They think sex is ugly and don't want to discuss it. They especially don't want to discuss their own sex life with others.'

Sex gets better with age as focus shifts to quality over quantity in the bedroom
By Daniel Bates
28 December 2016

Sex gets better as we get older because we develop more ‘sexual wisdom’ in our later years.

Older people tend to focus on quality rather than quantity when they are in the bedroom, a study found. Older lovers put more ‘thought and effort’ into sex that counters a possible drop off in libido in our 60s and beyond. They also draw on their experiences in life and use them to make themselves more considerate sexual partners.

Sex has long been thought of as the one area of our lives which gets worse with age. Whilst we benefit from experience at work as we get older and become better at managing our money, sex seems to be the thing which passes us by.

The researchers from the University of Minnesota however found that this was not the case. They analyzed data on 6,000 people aged 20 to 93 based on survey questions completed by mail in 1995, 2003, and 2013.

Among the questions was: how would you rate the sexual aspects of your life these days, from the worst possible situation to the best possible situation? The basic findings were that the quality of your sex life gets worse with age.

However quality and not quantity appeared to the the thing that older lovers were striving for. Lead researcher Miri Forbes said that the "frequency of sex became less important with age, and the amount of thought and effort invested in sex became more important." She wrote: "These changing priorities were key predictors of sexual quality of life for older adults, and appeared to buffer its decline. When we matched older and younger adults on key characteristics of their sex lives - along with sociodemographic characteristics, and mental and physical health - older adults actually had better sexual quality of life."

The study said that, given a choice between a 40-year-old man and a 50-year-old man who invested the same amount of thought and effort and had sex with the same number of partners, the 50-year-old would have a better sex life.

Forbes said: "Together these findings suggest that as we age, our sexual priorities change and we develop knowledge, skills and preferences that protect against aging-related declines in sexual quality of life. Since wisdom is ‘the quality of having experience, knowledge and good judgment’, our study suggests that life experience is fostering sexual wisdom. This is great news, as a satisfying sex life has been found to be important for health and well-being, regardless of age. For older adults in particular, being sexually active predicts a longer and healthier life."

Europe rights court: Sex still important for older women
By BARRY HATTON
25 July 2017

LISBON, Portugal (AP) -- Judges in Portugal were guilty of sexual discrimination in a medical compensation case when they decided that the importance of sex diminished with the age of a woman, Europe's human rights court ruled in a judgment published Tuesday.

Maria Morais, a 50-year-old Portuguese woman with two children, claimed that medical negligence during botched gynecological surgery at a Portuguese hospital in 1995 left her unable to have normal sexual relations. She won her compensation case for physical and mental suffering, but the hospital then won a 2013 appeal that cut the payout by around one-third.

Justifying the cut, judges in Lisbon argued sex was not as important because of her age. The three-judge panel - made up of two men and a woman - were all over 50, according to Morais's lawyer, Vitor Ribeiro. The case triggered a storm of protest in Portugal, where one female lawmaker described the ruling as "Taliban jurisprudence."

The France-based European Court of Human Rights sided with Morais, saying Portuguese judges were guilty of "prejudices" and had violated the right to respect for private and family life. It ordered Portugal to pay Morais 3,250 euros ($3,790) in damages and 2,460 euros for costs and expenses.

The Portuguese court's decision "ignored the physical and psychological importance of sexuality for women's self-fulfillment and other dimensions of women's sexuality," the European court said. "The (Lisbon court) decision had moreover been based on the general assumption that sexuality was not as important for a 50-year-old woman and mother of two children as for someone of a younger age. In the (European) court's view, those considerations showed the prejudices prevailing in the judiciary in Portugal," it added. There was no immediate reaction from Portuguese authorities.

The European court noted two other judgments in Portugal, in 2008 and 2014, concerning medical malpractice complaints by two male patients. In those cases, Portugal's Supreme Court found that the fact that the men could no longer have normal sexual relations had affected their self-esteem and brought "tremendous or strong mental shock," regardless of their age or whether they had had children or not.
