David Bowie's celebrity lovers and wild orgies with his wife - his life of sex and drugs and rock'n'roll
11 January 2016
By Sophie Evans

Bowie's relentless romantic adventures saw him bed an array of partners - both men and women - in the decades before his death.

He was known for his extraordinary musical talent. But David Bowie's voracious sexual appetite was also widely documented. The rock legend's relentless romantic adventures saw him bed an array of partners - both men and women - in the decades before his death, according to a book published last year.

He reportedly engaged in relationships with Elizabeth Taylor, Marianne Faithfull, Bianca Jagger, Susan Sarandon and Ola Hudson - the mother of Guns 'N Roses guitarist, Slash. But he also had rumoured sexual relations with men, including The Rolling Stones star, Mick Jagger.

Other parts of Bowie's erotic journey saw him engage in a threesome with his ex-wife Angie Bowie on the day of their wedding - something the former model recently admitted to on TV. And he disputed his own claims, in separate interviews, that he was both gay and bisexual.

In her 2014 biography, Bowie , author Wendy Leigh describes how Bowie was only ready to settle down with his second wife, Iman, after satisfying his large sexual appetite. She says he and Angie, who was a 19-year-old student when they first met, "were notorious about weaving a sexual web around those who took their fancy", according to the New York Daily News. While Bowie was an aspiring musician from the London suburb of Bromley who was "adept at playing" the capital's "gay elite", Angie was a notorious hedonist, Leigh writes.

Angie herself recently admitted on Celebrity Big Brother how she was late to her wedding to Bowie because she was caught up in a threesome - involving the groom. "We were both late," she claimed, not revealing who the third person was. In her autobiography Backstage Passes: Life On The Wild Side With David Bowie , published 11 years before Leigh's book, she writes of the first night she slept with Bowie. "That night I was introduced in no uncertain fashion to one essential aspect of David Bowie’s character: the man is a stud and proud of it," she says.

She adds: "He was a rotten boyfriend at first, or at least not the one I wanted him to be. I was still at the age when a girl assumes her lover is going to be nice to her even if he isn’t faithful (or in David’s case, even if he has the instincts of a bisexual alleycat). But David was cold."

At one point, Angie reportedly caught Bowie and Mick Jagger in bed together. However, she says in her book that there was a "turning point" when her lover started acting in a kind and sensitive manner and revealed personal elements of his past to her. She also got a glimpse of his music genius - and immediately realised he was special, she says.

"This was a special man, different and great, one in a million or more," she writes. According to Leigh's book, Angie had an “uncanny ability to bring home the most free-spirited girls” willing to make themselves available to both herself and Bowie at their home. A year after the couple married in 1970, they had a son together, Duncan Zowie Haywood Jones.

Then, in 1972, Bowie's portrayal of a doomed bisexual alien rock star, Ziggy Stardust, propelled him to global stardom. Bowie and Ziggy, wearing outrageous costumes, makeup and bright orange hair, took the rock world by storm. That year, Bowie said he was gay in an interview in the Melody Maker newspaper.

But four years later, he told Playboy that he was sexually interested in both men and women, declaring: "It's true - I'm bisexual." However, in the eighties, he told Rolling Stone magazine that the declaration was "the biggest mistake I ever made", and that he was "always a closet heterosexual".

According to Leigh's book, one of Bowie's male lovers, his assistant Tony Zanetta, said the star was "sensual and narcissistic" in bed and seemingly wanted to be "adored". Leigh also claims that cocaine use enhanced Bowie's sexual appetite and over the decades, he reportedly engaged in relations with Taylor, Faithfull and Bianca Jagger, among others.

However, the excesses of a hedonistic life took its toll on the star. In a reference to his prodigious appetite for cocaine, Bowie once said: "I blew my nose one day in California and half my brains came out. Something had to be done." By the time he met Iman Abdulmajid in Los Angeles in 1990, the musician's previously insatiable sexual drive had been satisfied, Leigh writes, and they married in 1992.

In August 2000, the pair had a daughter, Alexandria Zahra Jones. Four years later, Bowie underwent emergency heart surgery. He subsequently kept a low profile, but marked his 69th birthday on Friday with the release of a new album, Blackstar, with critics giving the thumbs up to the latest work in a long and innovative career. He passed away peacefully yesterday, his family confirmed in a statement .

This morning, Bowie's film director son tweeted a touching snap of his father carrying him on his shoulders as an infant, writing: "Very sorry and sad to say it's true. I'll be offline for a while. Love to all."

A host of famous faces also paid tribute to the musician as news of his death broke, including Kristin Chenoweth, Kanye West, Madonna, Marc Almond, Gene Simmons and Tim Peake.

British Prime Minister David Cameron tweeted: "I grew up listening to and watching the pop genius David Bowie. He was a master of re-invention, who kept getting it right. A huge loss."

London Mayor Boris Johnson added: "Terrible news to hear Brixton born David Bowie has died. No one in our age has better deserved to be called a genius."

Genre-defying musical legend Prince dead at 57
By HILLEL ITALIE, NEKESA MUMBI MOODY and JEFF BAENEN
April 21, 2016

CHANHASSEN, Minn. (AP) -- Prince could play guitar like Carlos Santana or Jimi Hendrix, sing like James Brown, turn out pop melodies worthy of Motown or lay down the deepest grooves this side of Sly and the Family Stone. But no one could mistake his sound for anyone but Prince.

The dazzlingly talented and charismatic singer, songwriter, arranger and instrumentalist who died Thursday at his home drew upon the history of modern popular music and created a gender- and genre-defying blend of rock, funk and soul. With hits including "1999," ''Purple Rain" and "Little Red Corvette," Prince's records sold more than 100 million copies and earned him Grammys and an Academy Award.

The Minneapolis native stood just 5 feet, 2 inches, yet made a powerful visual impact at the dawn of the MTV era, proving to be the Little Richard for the '80s, from his wispy moustache and tall pompadour to his colorful and suggestive outfits - the counterpart to the openly erotic lyrics that made him one of the most sexually daring artists of the era.

But his greatest legacy was as a musician, summoning original and compelling sounds at will, whether playing guitar in a flamboyant style that drew on Hendrix, switching his vocals from a nasally scream to an erotic falsetto, or turning out album after album of stunningly innovative material. Among his other notable releases: "Sign O' the Times," ''Graffiti Bridge" and "The Black Album."

"He rewrote the rulebook, forging a synthesis of black funk and white rock that served as a blueprint for cutting-edge music in the Eighties," reads his dedication in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. "Prince made dance music that rocked and rock music that had a bristling, funky backbone. From the beginning, Prince and his music were androgynous, sly, sexy and provocative."

The 57-year-old superstar passed away Thursday at his home in suburban Minneapolis. The local sheriff said deputies found Prince unresponsive in an elevator late Thursday morning after being summoned to his home, but that first-responders couldn't revive him. "I am confirming that Prince, the legendary iconic performer has died at his home this morning at Paisley Park," his publicist, Yvette Noel-Schure, told the Associated Press in a phone call. No details about what may have caused his death have been released. Prince postponed a concert in Atlanta on April 7, saying he had fallen ill with the flu, and he apologized to fans during a makeup concert last week. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.

Mick Jagger was among numerous musicians, actors and other public figures praising the artist, tweeting: "Prince's talent was limitless. He was one of the most unique and talented artists of the last 30 years." Madonna called him a "true visionary," while Oprah Winfrey tweeted: "Prince the doves really are crying now. Listening to your music. Remembering you."

Even President Barack Obama - for whom Prince was a White House guest last year - released a statement, saying he and his wife "joined millions of fans from around the world" in mourning Prince's sudden death. "Few artists have influenced the sound and trajectory of popular music more distinctly, or touched quite so many people with their talent," Obama said. " 'A strong spirit transcends rules,' Prince once said - and nobody's spirit was stronger, bolder, or more creative." Buildings around the country glowed with the artist's signature purple Thursday night.

Born Prince Rogers Nelson, Prince broke through in the late 1970s with the hits "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?" and "I Wanna Be Your Lover," and soared over the following decade with such albums as "1999" and "Purple Rain." The title song from "1999," his funky and flippant anthem about an oncoming nuclear holocaust, includes one of the most quoted refrains of popular culture: "Tonight I'm gonna party like it's 1999." He won seven Grammys and received an Academy Award in 1985 for his music from the movie "Purple Rain." In 2004, Prince was inducted into the Rock and Roll of Fame, which hailed him as a musical and social trailblazer.

Prince made his acting debut in "Purple Rain," playing a sexy, androgynous young musician on the cusp of fame. The film amplified Prince's popularity and was a box-office success with $68 million in ticket sales. Besides winning the Oscar for Original Song Score, the "Purple Rain" soundtrack won Grammys for its writing and performance. The film received mixed reviews, but Roger Ebert called it "one of the best combinations I've seen of music and drama."

Prince was fiercely protective of his independence, battling his record company over control of his material and even his name. Anxious to get out of his contract with Warner Bros., he identified himself by a key-like symbol with an unpronounceable name. (Journalists called him "TAFKAP," or The Artist Formerly Known as Prince). Prince also once wrote "slave" on his face in protest of not owning his work and famously fought and then departed Warner, before returning a few years ago. "What's happening now is the position that I've always wanted to be in," Prince told the Associated Press in 2014. "I was just trying to get here."

Music was in his blood. Prince's father played in a jazz band in Minneapolis, under the name "Prince Rogers," and his mother was the singer. The precocious young Prince taught himself to play the piano at age 7, the guitar at 13 and the drums at 14. But his home life was also troubled. His parents separated when he was 10, and Prince, who ended up with six siblings and half siblings, moved back and forth between the homes of his mother and father.

In 1978, the year he turned 20, Prince debuted with the album "For You." It was a declaration, if nothing else, that he could do anything: He wrote and sang the material, and served as his own one-man band on guitar, bass, drums, synthesizers, chimes and assorted other instruments. The album received mixed reviews, but his second album - called "Prince" - sold more than a million copies and launched his run of hit albums and singles over the next few years.

But he didn't just become a star in his own right: He was a veritable music factory, whether with side projects, such as Vanity and Morris Day and The Time, or the songs he wrote for others. Sinead O'Connor had a hit with "Nothing Compares 2 U," while other covers included Cyndi Lauper's "When You Were Mine" and the Bangles' "Manic Monday."

Prince's influence even extended to politics, well before Obama's time. In the mid-1980s, Tipper Gore, wife of then-Sen. Al Gore of Tennessee, heard one of her daughters listening to Prince's "Darling Nikki." Horrified by the song's reference to masturbation, she helped launch an organization dedicated to a labeling system for explicit content, the Parents Music Resource Center. A nationwide debate about censorship soon followed, including congressional testimony from Frank Zappa among others, and the refusal by some record sellers to offer releases deemed in need of advisories.

Prince had been touring and recording right up until his death, releasing four albums in the last 18 months, including two on the Tidal streaming service last year. He performed in Atlanta last week as part of his "Piano and a Microphone" tour, a stripped-down show that featured a mix of his hits, like "Purple Rain" or "Little Red Corvette," and some B-sides from his extensive library. Prince debuted the intimate format at his Paisley Park studios in January, treating fans to a performance that was personal and both playful and emotional at times.

The musician seemed to be shedding his reclusive reputation. He hosted several late-night jam sessions where he serenaded Madonna, celebrated the Minnesota Lynx's WNBA championship and showcased his latest protege, singer Judith Hill. Ever surprising, he announced on stage in New York City last month that he was writing his memoir, "The Beautiful Ones," which was expected to be released in the fall of 2017 by publishing house Spiegel & Grau. A press release about the memoir said Prince would "take readers on an unconventional and poetic journey through his life and creative work," and include stories about his music, family and the "people, places and ideas that fired his creative imagination." A spokeswoman for Spiegel & Grau, Theresa Zoro, said Thursday the publisher had no immediate comment on the book's status.

About 200 fans had gathered by Thursday afternoon outside Paisley Park, Prince's home and music studio, where his gold records are on the walls and the purple motorcycle he rode in "Purple Rain," is on display. The sprawling white, stone building is surrounded by a fence in Chanhassen, a city about 20 miles southwest of Minneapolis.

Steven Scott, 32, of Eden Prairie, said he was at Paisley Park last Saturday for Prince's dance party. He called Prince "a beautiful person" whose message was that people should love one another. "He brought people together for the right reasons," Scott said.

Moody and Italie reported from New York. Associated Press writers David Bauder in New York, Paul Newberry in Atlanta and Steve Karnowski in Chanhassen also contributed.

Singer Pete Burns dies of heart attack at age 57
25 October 2016

LONDON (AP) — Pete Burns, singer with the British band Dead or Alive that had success in the 1980s, has died after suffering a heart attack. He was 57.

The singer's management and family said in a statement that Burns died suddenly on Sunday. He was best known for his 1985 dance hit "You Spin Me Round" and his appearances on reality TV shows including "Celebrity Big Brother" and "Celebrity Wife Swap." Burns became famous in the 1980s when Dead or Alive attracted wide attention with a string of successful singles.

Culture Club singer Boy George and others paid tribute to Burns Tuesday. Boy George tweeted that he was "tearful" about Burns' sudden death. "He was one of our great true eccentrics and such a big part of my life! Wow. Hard to believe!" Boy George said. Many others who had worked with Burns expressed sadness at the loss and admiration for his musical gifts.

Burns was born in northwestern England and started making changes to his appearance at an early age. He was known for extensive cosmetic surgery that radically altered his look. He worked in a record shop as a teenager and formed several bands that were unable to score any breakthrough hits. That changed with the founding of Dead or Alive in 1985.

Burns was married to Lynne Corlett for more than 25 years until they divorced in 2006. Michael Simpson has been his partner since 2007. His ex-wife, his partner and his manager all announced Burns' death in a statement, calling him "a beautifully talented soul" who will be missed by all who loved him and appreciated his work.

George Michael died of natural causes, British coroner says
By JILL LAWLESS
7 March 2017

LONDON (AP) -- George Michael died of natural causes as the result of heart disease and a fatty liver, a British coroner said Tuesday.

Darren Salter, senior coroner for the county of Oxfordshire in southern England, said a post-mortem has found that the singer died of "dilated cardiomyopathy with myocarditis and fatty liver." Dilated cardiomyopathy is a condition in which the left ventricle of the heart becomes stretched and weakened, limiting the heart's ability to pump blood. Myocarditis is inflammation of the heart muscle.

The former Wham! singer-songwriter was found dead at his country home in Oxfordshire on Dec. 25. He was 53.

An initial autopsy failed to determine the cause of death. Salter said that because Michael died of natural causes, there will be no coroner's inquest or further inquiries. Police initially investigated and took witness statements in order to establish facts Michael's death, which they called "unexplained but non-suspicious."

Wham!, formed by Michael and his friend Andrew Ridgeley, topped charts in the 1980s with exuberant pop hits including "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" and "Young Guns (Go For It)." Michael went on to a solo career studded with major hits including "Careless Whisper" and "Freedom" and sold more than 100 million albums around the world.

He also suffered problems with drugs and alcohol, and in 2010 was briefly jailed after crashing his Range Rover into a shop front near his London home while high on prescription drugs and marijuana. Michael had experienced health problems including a bout of pneumonia in 2011 that saw him hospitalized in intensive care. He said later it had been "touch and go" whether he would survive. Michael's former partner, Kenny Goss, has said he thinks the musician's body "just gave up."

Dilated cardiomyopathy can be an inherited condition, or can be caused by factors such as viral infections and high blood pressure. Myocarditis is usually caused by a viral, bacterial or fungal infection, while fatty liver disease can be caused by alcohol, or by other factors that cause a buildup of fat in the liver.

Michael's death prompted an outpouring of recognition for his musical gifts as well as his charitable work in support of groups including AIDS groups, cancer charities and Childline, which offers confidential phone counseling for young people. Paying tribute to Michael at the Brit Awards last month, Ridgeley said that with his death, "a supernova in a firmament of shining stars has been extinguished."

Private funeral held for pop icon George Michael
29 March 2017

London (dpa) - A private funeral was held for British pop singer George Michael on Wednesday, his publicists said.

"Family and close friends gathered for the small, private ceremony to say goodbye to their beloved son, brother and friend," London-based Connie Filippello Publicity said in a statement.

It said Michael's family wanted to thank his fans across the world "for their many messages of love and support," adding that the family would not release any further details of the funeral.

The London Evening Standard said Michael's recent boyfriend, Fadi Fawaz, joined "a number of Michael's high profile friends, rumoured to include Kate Moss and Martin Kemp" at the event.

The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon at Highgate Cemetery in north London, where many notable people, including German social philosopher Karl Marx, are buried, the newspaper said.

Michael, 53, was found dead at his home in the English county of Oxfordshire, west of London, on Christmas Day.

A post mortem concluded that he died of natural causes linked to heart and liver problems.

Musicians from Britain and around the world had paid tribute to Michael, who sold more than 100 million albums throughout his career spanning almost four decades.

The son of a Greek Cypriot father and British mother, his real name was Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou.

He rose to fame as a member of 1980s pop duo Wham! with Andrew Ridgeley, known for their hits "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go," "Club Tropicana" and "Last Christmas."

New George Michael single aired 8 months after star's death
7 September 2017

phpBB [video]

LONDON (AP) -- A new single by George Michael has been released, eight months after the music star's death.

"Fantasy," first recorded in the late 1980s, has been reworked by funk-master Nile Rodgers. It received its first radio airplay on Thursday. Michael's publicist says the song was meant to be included on Michael's 1990 album "Listen Without Prejudice" but got "lost in the ether." Michael asked Rodgers last year to rework the song for release as the lead single for a reissue of "Listen Without Prejudice."

Michael died Dec. 25, aged 53, from heart disease and a build-up of fat in his liver.

Rodgers tweeted that he felt "emotional ambiguity" about the song, which evoked "tears, uncertainty, happiness and love." The reissued album, "Listen Without Prejudice/MTV Unplugged," will be released Oct. 20.
