Pole wooded then killed lonely men, court told
9 April 2013

A woman accused of finding men using lonely hearts columns and then killing them to inherit their wealth has gone on trial for double murder in at a court in Krems, Lower Austria, this week.

The 52-year-old Polish defendant is accused of poisoning to death two men with arsenic. It is alleged that the carer poisoned the 68-year-old Vienna man and a 61-year-old from Lower Austria in October 2010 and February 2011. She told the court yesterday through an interpreter that she did not believe that poison had been found in the men's bodies. She also claims she did not murder anybody.

She told judge Susanne Daniel in a very slow questioning process that she had not had any kind of intimate relationship with either of the men, but just worked as a cleaner for them. When asked by the judge: "Do you have an explanation as to why both of the men were given arsenic after meeting you?" she replied by saying she had not given either of the men arsenic.

The first victim got into contact with the Pole after trying to find a partner through a lonely hearts announcement. He fell in love with the Polish women - the prosecutor claims. The public prosecutor said: "She had financial problems and at some point realised that she would not be able to pay her debts through being a carer alone. She apparently lovingly cared for Mr A. and even organised his funeral. After his death doctors were not suspicious and found it to be a result of alcohol and nicotine."

The second victim also met the woman through a lonely hearts advert. The man was seeking a relationship and the public prosecutor claims he was not in ill health until he met the Pole. The daughter of the first victim became suspicious after she found that her father had given her an apartment in Vienna, his Mercedes and his mobile home - which she then 'sold' to her son. She also took 10,000 Euro from his bank account as he lay in hospital. His daughter claims it was a financially motivated crime.

The accused told the court she came to Austria to earn money but denied any involvement in the men's deaths. Her lawyer Timo Gerersdorfer argued that no arsenic had been found in her possession or around her, which public prosecutor Susanne Waidecker claimed was irrelevant. The court was also made aware of contradictions in the Polish woman's statements when interviewed by police.

The case continues today (Tuesday).
